IECA 2009-Congratulations Kelsi!

Picnik collage

Congratulations to Kelsi Bates, a Weldon Barber in Downtown Spokane for winning 3rd place in the IECA Hair Competition. This year was Kelsi’s second time placing at the competition. Nice Job Kelsi! Enjoy this a quick interview with Kelsi and take home some of her hair tips.

Tell us about the competition. What style did you cut?

I had my model dressed up as Maverick from Top Gun. I cut a tight fade on the sides and left it long and piecey in the front. To achieve the style I used Aveda Pomade on his damp hair to create that messy look with high shine and medium hold.

What kind of guy does this style work for?

This style is really great for anyone, but looks best with masculine facial features. Use pomade to slick hair back for a more sophisticated, professional look or tousle your hair for a trendier look.

Any recommendations for Weldon guys that you’d like to share?

I would say that all guys should use the right shampoo and conditioner for their hair. The right shampoo and conditioner will vary depending on the guy, but it will keep hair manageable and keep scalps healthy (so guys can hold on to their hair as long as possible). I like Aveda’s Pure Formance Shampoo and Conditioner for most hair types because it targets itchy, flaky or even oily scalps resulting in fantastic, soft hair.

Tool Kit

Alright guys, we know that grooming connotates something that should be done to your neighbor’s poodle. However, it’s something that both YOU and Frou Frou need to keep in mind. It’s important to keep those nails cleaned and clipped, keep nose hair at bay and take care of your physical appearance.

Unfortunately, most of the grooming tools you’d typically find aren’t fit for a man (FYI a man’s nails are much larger in size than a woman’s) and they certainly don’t look manly.

Meet ACE grooming tools. These tools are the grooming equivalent of your hammer and tool kit.

At Weldon, we’ve got your:

  • ACE Dual Action Nose and Ear trimmer
  • ACE Facial Grooming Kit
  • ACT Nail and Toenail Clippers

Check out the tools and start using nail clippers built for the manly man (but remember, this manly man is not hidden by unclipped nails and unsightly nose hair; he’s lookin’ pretty good).

Happy Veteran’s Day!

Happy Veteran’s Day! In celebration of the men and women who serve and have served this country, today’s post is dedicated to the flat top.

Now, we know that technically the military haircut is the high and tight with extremely short sides. The flat top is a similar style to the high and tight, but can be adapted to different lengths. It’s a classic, clean look that balances precision and strength, a great haircut for any guy.

The flat top is a great look, but it’s essential to ask around and find a barber who is well versed in cutting flat tops. We’ve got at least one barber at each Weldon Barber who has perfected their flat tops, so be sure to call ahead and ask so you can schedule with a specialist.

Tawney from the South Hill Weldon provides some insight on the benefits and downsides of the flat top (P.S. Feel free to schedule your flat top with Tawney!).

Benefits:

-The flat top is a low maintenance cut that always looks polished, even if you just jumped out of bed.

-In order to style your hair all you need is some American Crew Fiber or Defining Paste. If you’ve been wearing a flat top for  a while now, you may not have to use any styling products at all.

Downsides:

-In order to maintain your flat top a cut every 2-3 weeks is advised.

-Since the flat top is a difficult cut to achieve, you need to schedule your appointments with the right barber!

As a thank you to both former and current military we offer 20% off all Weldon services at every shop, every day.

We know the shampoo and condition is one of the greatest parts of the hair cut. Although we can’t offer you the amazing scalp massage at home–you can get a piece of the Weldon experience everyday by using the same terriffic products.

Here’s what you need to recreate the shampoo at Mill Creek, Kirkland, Issaquah, Spokane Valley and South Hill shops:

weldonshampoo

American Crew Daily Shampoo Gently cleanses the scalp with natural extracts such as Rosemary, Thyme and Panama Bark

American Crew Stimulating Conditioner Invigorates the hair and scalp with Panama Bark, Rosemary, Thyme, Peppermint and Menthol

The Downtown Spokane and 5 mile locations use:

What inspired you to cut hair and become a barber? I kind of just fell into it. I thought I would cut hair to pay for college, but then it turned into something I loved! I found out that I could do something I love and get paid for it!

What is your favorite part about working at Weldon Barber? All of it! I love my clients and get excited to see them…they’re like my friends. And I love the people I work with; we have a little family here at Weldon. It’s really just a good package deal for me. It’s also great to work with the other barbers, train them, and of course work with hair. I am probably the biggest advocate for Weldon Barber. I love my job and I love this company.

What are your favorite products to work with right now? I really like to work with American Crew Forming Cream and Fiber. I also have a new favorite–anything that smells like Lemon Sage for Paul Mitchell. I use the body wash and I got my boyfriend the hand cream. It smells so good.  One last great product we carry is Sharps Shave Gel. It’s aloe based and pushes the follicle of the hair up for a close, clean shave. It also goes on clear making it perfect if you need to do any detailing. It is the best shave gel I’ve ever used.

What are the best men’s hairstyles? In my opinion, guys like lean looking hair styles. Anything you can do to lean out the style will give them that desired masculine shape.

What hair and skincare tips would you recommend to guys? Use conditioner! Guys hair gets so brittle, dry and fuzzy so it’s great to add that element of moisture. I love the Lemon Sage Conditioner. A last tip: listen to your barber! Your barber will be able to give you all the hair and skincare tips tailored to your specific needs.

Weldon Tips for Looking Young(er)

SKIN

1. Follow a specific skin care regimen. A simple regimen to follow is Sharps Daily Prep. Start with the Daily Prep Foaming Face  Wash,  followed by the Skin Tuner, Daily Prep Tuning Face Lotion.

2. Wear sunscreen. Trade out the Daily Prep Tuning Face Lotion for Sharps Dail Prep Oil-Free Sunscreen Face Lotion SPF 15 to get in some good old SPF.

HAIR

1. Update your style: If you’ve got a full head of hair, instead of parting your hair to one side, push it forward. Use American Crew’s Defining Paste and use your hands to pull hair to the front. Add some texture with your fingers and the Defining Paste for a more modern.

2. Go lean on the sides: If you get your hair cut shorter and leaner on the sides it will slim out your entire face.

3. Camoflague: Take care of those pesky gray hairs with combed in color. At Weldon we offer Camouflage Color. It will camouflage your grays and blend with your hair…don’t worry, just because you’re adding a little color doesn’t mean you don’t have to look like Elvis!
